Frequently Asked Questions
EMPLOYERS
How long do internships last?
Internships are fully customizable, with duration configured based on project requirements. While most internships typically last 8-12 weeks, some have been shorter for task-based projects, and others have been extended beyond six months.
Are there any intern requirements or restrictions I should be aware of?
Some of our interns have requirements or restrictions regarding how and when they can work. For example, students from UC Berkeley cannot work more than 20 hours per week to qualify for Work-Study funding.
Make sure to ask each intern at the beginning of your interviews if they have any restrictions or requirements from their program. Reach out to support@folio.works if you have questions or concerns about any requirements/restrictions in interviews - we might be able to help!
How do I pay my interns?
Paying your interns is quick and easy.
1. First, you'll need to create a free account on Stripe and connect your company bank account.
2. Every two weeks, the Folio Team will send your intern's Timesheet Log to the administrators listed on your company profile. Please respond within 48 hours if there are any issues with the intern's time sheets.
3. After that time, Folio will issue a payment to the student for the wages owed and will process a payment from your bank account on file for the portion of the wages due.
For questions about how to pay your interns, please reach out to billing@folio.works.
How long are interns subsidized?
3-9 months is the average time we offer subsidies for Folio interns. The amount of time is dependent on the number of hours interns work each week and the source of the subsidy
What happens after the intern's subsidy has run out?
Internships may extend beyond the subsidized period if your company is interested in providing a unsubsidized paid offer on the Folio platform.
How do I hire additional interns?
Once you've ended your contract with your current interns, or if you need more hands on deck in the middle of your project, you can hire additional interns through Folio. To employ new interns, please log in to your Folio account and follow the steps to post a new job description.
Our team will contact you at the beginning of each month with a new batch of qualified, subsidized interns. If you are interested in interviewing a candidate from the new talent pool, simply reply to the email, and we will facilitate an introduction.

STUDENTS
Does Folio provide work authorization?
Folio offers letters that satisfy CPT/OPT requirements. Once you are accepted into a Venture Cohort, we will reach out with further details regarding your particular CPT/OPT letter. Folio.works is e-verified, and we are willing to help you with any forms your specific school might require to process your CPT/OPT status.
If you're on a Stem OPT Extension, please get in touch with us at support@folio.works.
Folio CANNOT sponsor H1-B visas or guarantee that the startups we work with will sponsor them.
Am I guaranteed a full-time offer at the end of the internship?
While we can provide you with several options for your internship, we cannot assure you that you will receive a full-time offer. That will have to be a discussion you have with the hiring manager before the internship starts, ongoing during your project, and afterward.
How many hours can I work?
We recommend 10-20 hours/week as an active student. If you are not enrolled, enrolled part-time, or an international student with VISA limitations, we will guide you and your host company.
Can I intern for multiple companies?
We recommend against it, as past experience has taught us that students who take on multiple internships generally struggle to keep up with the demands of each internship.
Can my internship qualify for college credit?
Yes! College students can work with their university department to earn college credit for their internship. We do not have the resources to facilitate this for you, but we highly recommend you reach out to our department advisor to ask for credit.
